Why Your Website Gets Clicks But No Calls: The 3% Problem

TamiTami, Head of Web Design·11 June 2026·4 min read

You can see them in your analytics: hundreds of people visiting your website every month. And yet the phone sits there like it's decorative. This isn't a traffic problem. It's what the industry politely calls a conversion problem, and it is quietly the most expensive problem a local business can have.

The 3% problem

The average small business website converts around 3% of visitors into an enquiry. Read that the other way: 97 out of every 100 people who found you, clicked you and looked at you decided to do nothing. If those clicks came from ads, you paid for all 100 of them.

Why websites lose people

A typical website is built to say everything: history, services, gallery, about the team, a blog nobody updates. Give a visitor eight choices and they take the ninth, which is the back button. Slow loading finishes the job. Every extra second of load time bleeds mobile visitors, and trades traffic is overwhelmingly mobile, usually someone standing in front of the exact problem they want fixed.

What a 10-25% page does differently

The landing pages we run for Google Ads convert between 10% and 25%, and none of it is magic. One page, one service, one action. The headline answers the search they just typed. Proof sits right under it: reviews, before and afters, guarantees in writing. The phone number is a button that's always on screen, and the form takes seconds, not minutes. Everything a visitor could want is above their thumb, and everything they don't need is gone.

The maths that makes it matter

Same ad budget, same clicks. At 3%, 300 clicks is 9 enquiries. At 15%, it's 45. That's a 5x difference in leads without spending an extra pound on traffic, which is why we build a dedicated landing page for every campaign we run rather than pointing money at a homepage and hoping.

If your site is getting traffic that never turns into calls, the fix is usually days away, not months. Tell us what you do and where in the funnel below and we'll show you what your numbers should look like.
